Pileated Woodpecker
We first noticed the woodpecker by the noises it made. It sounded like an agitated squirrel. Once I got the camera, he had stopped, but I captured a nice set of portrait shots.

22 years ago I scratch-built 5 identical models of the Denver Rio Grande RR Mudhen, the K-27 #461. They were never painted. I wanted them to show the detailed features and craftsmanship. Next to the Shay it was the most ambitous project. It took two years for their completion. It won 1st Prize at the NMRA meet in Vancouver in 2001.
A Funicular in the Garden in HD

My extensive Garden Railroad just sprouted another extension, a FUNICULAR. It is such a simple looking, 6 meter long, addition, that it is hard to understand why it was such a formidable challenge to conceive and build. Two small, modified LGB cars are climbing alternately the 20 % grade. The "Standseilbahn" is running on automatic with the help of an "Arduino" microprocessor. A friend helped w...

Enjoy the view travelling next to the engineer on a Swiss Passenger Train (RhB) that is starting at the new storage shed, travelling over the scenic big loop (400 meters) and returning to the shed. This trip was recorded late in the year and includes all the latest additions. The leaves are are beginning to fall and it becomes difficult to keep the tracks clear. Enjoy.

This video is reissued as a new version. It shows the building of 6 Model Passenger Cars (3 different types) as they are at home on the Harzer Schmalspur Bahnen (HSB) in Germany. The models are scratch-built using mostly brass sheet metal. Only the wheels are purchased, all other parts are hand made. There are approx 250 individual parts making up a single car. They are build in a scale of 1: 2...
New Spur to Storage Shed

A branch line was installed to park trains on wooden storage tracks in a newly build shed. The truss bridge crosses a walkway and is removeable. Therefore it required interlocks to prevent trains from diving accidentally when the bridge is not in place.

Very nicely done. I think the landscape is spot on for a garden railroad. Great job guys!
Thank you very much for your kind comment. By the way: it's guy, not guys
Greetings! It has been a while since I sent you a note; with lots of "stuff" going on here in sunny Florida. I've been watching your incredible videos and continued to be impressed with your talents and energy! At 76 now I'm really slowing down, and my writing takes a good bit of time. Finished book number 5, and trying to decide if I want to do anything with it. Just visiting the amazing world you have created gives me lots of enjoyment and mini-vacations. It's selfish to expect more and more videos because it's evident how much work and creativity you put into every minute; but, I'm always looking for more! Be safe and well!
Greetings to you too. It is heart-warming to read your message. You will pardon me if I say at 76 you are still a young man, I have just a few days ago turned 89, You will understand if I too have to slow-down a little. You are mentioning book number 5. Are you the writer of books that deal with teenage issues and are you giving talks at universities on this subject? There is an author by your name and he has written 4 books so far, I found that out by looking at Google. But he does not seem to live in Florida. I don't want to disappoint you. So I am working on another, be it only, a short video. You may recall the bridge that led in three truss sections over the pond. The racoons made me give-up on it. They tipped it over once too often. It is now history. The bridges themselfs, after some rework, are still in good shape and I found two places on my layout where they can still do duty. I keep the third as a spare. The video will show where they found their new place. One is serving to extend the streetcar to it"s new end station. The other is now part of the mainline. It was a considerable amount of work, plannig, moving earth and big rocks and relaying about 20 meters of track, but it"s nearly all finished now. You too keep healthy and safe.
@@Landsend-Railroad As usual, it is wonderful getting your message! Very much appreciated and enjoyed! To clarify things; I don't write about teenage issues since my kids are 48 and 50 years of age and our grand kids are between 19 and 24. My first book was titled: "Circumnavigating Oz", a trip around Australia. It's an account of a six week trip around Australia my sweet bride and I took in 2008. It was published in 2009, and I have sent lots and lots of digital copies. I no longer worry about the copyright issues and I'm just happy for as many people as possible to read it. It's 230 pages with 100 photographs. It covers the history of Australia (Called "Oz" by the Aussies... short for "God'z-own") the geography, and occasionally humorous anecdotes! It also has a bit of a "How-to" section on how to plan and pack for extended travels. During my long and occasionally successful career I worked in 78 countries and lived in 12 at various times. My absolutely favorite destination was B.C., mostly in the Vancouver-Victoria area; followed closely by Australia and New Zealand. After my nasty injury in 1997 I could no longer travel or work, so I took up writing and photography. The next four books are the story of an American family from 1962 to 2005 during the Vietnam War and selected related events. My current project is volume five, wrapping up some parts of the story that I hadn't explained clearly in the other four volumes. I haven't published it yet, but I'd better make up my mind in the relatively near future! It's lots harder to publish the books than writing them, especially working with an editor. That requires a bit of a thick skin! I'm mildly handicapped with a rare nerve condition as a result of my injury; and a very well known author has been an excellent mentor. He writes legal thrillers (ala' John Grisham) and has 20 New York Times best sellers. If you get any time to read (With all your incredible projects!) I'd be happy to send you one. As most of us are, I'm careful about publicly releasing my e-mail address, but this one should not be a problem; plus those of us who love your videos are a pretty safe group. Anyway, here goes: "bknight7111@gmail.com". I'd be happy to send you a digital copy. If you have the time and inclination, I'd be thrilled to correspond over that e-mail address. Be safe and well! Mike
One little point in wanted to add. A couple years ago I mentioned higher mountains (In jest!) and referred to a lay-out in New Jersey with VERY high mountains. I now remember the name: "Northlandz" It's not a typo; it does have a "Z" in it. The mountains are between 15 and 25 feet high, if I remember... Cheers!
Most impressive one I have seen so far, thank you!😊
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated
If this is someone's garden I am totally jealous, great video.
It is in my garden alright. You would not be jealous when you knew how much work it is to keep it decent looking. Mother natur is no help. Thanks for thr comment.
Bello video. Excelente en los detalles.
You’ve gone this far. Finish the job. Get rid of the noise and add the sound of a real train.

Simply lovely!
Thank you!
Los pequeños trenes a vapor son unas bellezas.
So twee and bland it made me feel quite nauseous. Nothing is going to compare to the Katz/train videos for artistry and imagination.
Interesting comment. How old are you? I just wondered, the word TWEE is actually baby-talk.
Wow, what a fabulous model railroad...well-done !!!!
Thank you, I try. The maintenance is getting more difficult when one gets older. In a few days I will be 89.
Well planned railtracks and lovely models. Always these your videos release stress by just watching those.
I am happy to hear my videos are helping you to relieve stress. You noticed, I put a fair amount of attention into the trackplanning. Some of the models are commercially available quite a few I have stratch-built. Thanks for your coment.
Hi. The COG LOCO on your layout is LGB 26270 ? LGB seem stop making it.
This is one of the most amazing rail journeys I have seen. It is absolutely incredible, thank you! I tried to keep up with where we were by following Google Maps, but because of the editing, it was impossible. Never mind. After such a long arduous trek, you certainly earned your crust.
I admire the extend of your interest in this journey. It is true, some less interesting sections I have removed to keep the length of the presentation in check. However, throughout the video the sequence is maintained. No scenes are out of place. Thank you for your very interesting comment.
Dear Mr. Werner. If we happen to pass by your house , can we make a sudden visit ? Thanks.
Not much to see right now. I still need to clean up. Later in the summer would be a better time.
@@Landsend-Railroad Thank you. See you in May End.
Wow, I can't imagine the amount of work put into this!
I am not far off having my 90th birthday. But as long as I can and get comments from people like you, I will keep up the work effort. Thanks for your appreciation.
@@Landsend-Railroad A railroad magnum opus at the very least. Incredible.
Muito legal muito criativo vocês
Well done!
WARNING!! This is addictive to watch!! Someone has an incredible talent with attention to detail. Only came for a quick look , but drawn in for the full duration. Congratulations to the person reading this. I can see a very big smile on your face right now. I could spend all day long in this garden.
A big smile indeed. Thank you for the endorsement. As for you spending all day long in my garden. You are welcome. There is a lot of winter clean-up to be done. But somehow I did not think that is what was on your mind.
@@Landsend-Railroad sir, having served 30 years with the fire and rescue service, I understand the importance of attention to detail, to achieve the very best outcomes measured by the level of determination , enthusiasm, and commitment. You sir, hold those same qualities . Coincidentally after my, shifts of 2 days and two nights, I would spend my spare time gardening. For my family. So, yes for sure, if I lived close by, I would offer to work in your garden for free!.. my philosophy is to earn what you receive in this life. So my proposal is, simple... All day hard working....for one hour, in therapy enjoying your creativity...cup of tea included, please. My job application already in the post!!! 😉
Sir, your life philosophy and determination is admirable. And in more ways than one our take on life ist identical. The people say: "The devil is in the details! " So is the fun they may miss to see and experience. Detailing may be tedious, but once you are done, the rewards are worth it. If you only lived close by....To find out is not so easy, the super visibility of RUclips is hardly the vehicle to find out. In a controlled invitational and not right-out public promotional we have had 600 visitors during one weekend. You will understand if I do not place my address here. Thanks for the application anyways.
Buenas tardes.
This is the coolest! I think you did an amazing job! Thanks for sharing!
I build that eons ago, sometime in the 80th. It really was a novel idea at the time, long before anyone else had anything of the kind. Thanks for your favorable comment.
Excelente el video. Es extenso el circuito de rieles. La afición del ferromodelismo perdure por siempre.
Beautiful and maximal realistic garden railway
This is an see inspiring railroad,I can,t get enough of it .i,m on my tenth view and it still excited me.well done
I am so glad you like what you see. It makes all the maintenance work I do worth while. Thanks for taking the trouble to boost my energy.
Excellent ride. Enjoyed the view and the smooth journey. Same time next year.
I'm adding Citreon C3 pluriel, Saabs (particularly anything HOT, mk1 SLK merc, k11 micra if not already... I'll update this if I think of anything else
What scale is this?
This is G scale, 45 mm gauge. The scale of the rolling stock is 1:22.5. Which makes them 1 meter gauge.
Very nicely detailed and compact. Just imagine all the cool layouts we're going to see with T-scale!
Felicitaciones. Este video es una belleza.
Gracias. El campo es tan hermoso que se lleva todo el mérito.

Exemplary dedication, patience and technical ability
You are very kind. It takes all of the above and then some. Many people could achive something of he kind, but they give up before they try.
Just WOW!
Incredible. I love how thoughtfully the plants are arranged and the addition of the people and cars was so well done. There were so many stories created by the people standing around. A true pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing!
I run the train relatively slowly this enables viewers to observe the details I spent so much time on. You obviously made good use of it. Thank you for your comment.
Very ingenious.
Really, the genius is with the real thing. I just copied it on a smaller scale. But Thanks anyways.
I was wondering how long to put all that up and just the design and tunnels I am speechless 😮
I started on the basic design and layout 20 years ago, but much has been changed or added to over the years, Thanks for the attention.
What a beautiful miniture railway!!
Your comment is appreciated. Thank you.
What is the radius of the outer curves?
The outer curves have a radius of 140 mm. It has a tighter section in the top right corner at 110 mm. The train is in that section at 0:43.
Thanks! The z gauge modelers say that the trains require 195 mm curves but your suitcase layout clearly disproves that.@@Landsend-Railroad
The wider radius is certainly indicated for the newer and longer models. The ones I run on the brief case are quite short.
Beautifull !!!!! Thank you for the most beautifull tracks I've ever seen!!!!!!!!! Amazing peacefull, detailed and worth of viewing many times!! ❤
I wanna run my RC Crawler along your rail way :)
Qué belleza de video. Felicitaciones.
Awesome
Fantastic!!! I can't imagine all the hours you must have put into this. A question - how do you prepare for storms, especially the heavy ones?
Thank you. Yes, it took and still takes a lot of hours to keep it all in shape. Storms, even mayor ones, do not do much harm. In almost 40 yerars of garden railroading I had no buildings or plants damaged and only one bridge blown over during a wind storm. A heavy rain is a different matter. Damage can be avoided by providing proper drainage. Cleaning the track after a heavy rain is unavoidable. A light drizzle is actually helpful to clean the track.
time, money, effort and a healthy amount of OCD I'm sure contributed to this amazing display
You got that right. It too all of the above to create this. And it is a one person effort. Amazingly it did not take an excessive amount of money, since much of it is home-grown. Even some of the trains are scratch-built. Not sure about the OCD???
May pinoy pa dito? Haha kulet ng trip naten eh noh
All the components inside brief case are able to be safe and not crushed when closed. Mike 77 year young wanna be Z-scale enthusiast. Prince George B.C. CANADA.
Yes indeed, everything in the briefcase, including the batteries and electronics, is secure and stays in place when the case is closed. The only exception is the train itself. I do remove it before closing and transporting the case. I am 88 years young and still work on my train hobbys. If you need help becoming a Z-scale enthusiast let me know. Maybe I can help.
The end part is interminable downhill and dynamic brakes worked their share to hold the weight. Bet the return trip, the 251 will smoke good for the uphill climb.. Really impressive ride and scenery. The good point, if it fall....you won´t get hurt, but be playing harp for St Pierre....excellent filmwork. Simple that shows everything.
On this paticular run the #110 had to do double duty with its dynamic brakes since the diesel engine of the #103 had quit on its arrival in Carcross the day before. This presented a lot of extra dead weight in the consist. The end part of the downhill run, as you call it, already begins at he summit 52:00. There are very few and only short stretches of level track almost all the way to "shops" 1:17:30. And thank you for your appreciation for my part in making this video
